The Extraordinary Gift of Surprise and Delight
One day recently, I was coming home from an afternoon out, and as I jumped out of my car to get the mail, I was greeted with a remarkable sight.
It was a sculpture made of very fine hemp twine and flower blossoms:

It literally took my breath away. I was startled awake, stopped in my tracks.
The surprise of it: it was a completely unexpected and delightful experience of beauty.
The brilliant yellow dandelion blossoms were so alive, like sunshine embodied. Dandelions usually get a very bad rap here; they’re considered noxious weeds, and yet there they were, shining in their glory, for my enjoyment.
Also, the juxtaposition of this beautiful piece of art with our scrubby drainage ditch by the mailbox really enchanted me.
It didn’t take me long to identify the artist. She’s an amazing sixteen year-old sculptor named Amy who lives down the road.
She said she had a lot of fun doing it. I sure had a lot of fun savoring it. It wasn’t only a beautiful piece of art, it was an experience.

I’m so glad you liked it! And what a great picture of it too.
Hey Lynne
I’m enjoying your pictures, too - it’s such a pleasure to learn about your visual talents!
I’m also celebrating Amy! It’s a pleasure to think of her investment in this work of art - and in her own expression of her artistic self.
Much love
Dorothy
