Squirrel Highways
I did this drawing while I was visiting my friend in downstate Illinois last weekend.

I was struck by the complex network of bare tree branches against a bright cold winter sky.
I drew it as a meditation. I wanted something to get lost in.
I named it “Squirrel Highways” because at home I often see the squirrels racing along these tree branches with what looks like wild abandon.
Actually, I think they are acting with great focus as they race from branch to branch. I’ve always loved their playful nature combined with absolute presence.
Yesterday a squirrel caught my attention as it raced along the Squirrel Highways here at home.
It flew with the greatest of ease, landed on a honeysuckle branch that was full of berries, and filled up, all the while practicing some impressive gymnastic moves. Abundance was right there for the taking.
The times in my life when abundance has flowed most easily to me have been when I am completely present in each moment, focused on something I’m passionate about, and in a playful spirit.
This experience didn’t make me want to get out and race along the big network of tree branches around me.
However, I do want to devote my time and life energy to things that demand of me high focus, great presence, and a playful spirit. I’m sorting for those, trusting that the abundance will flow within and through each of them.
